Camping opportunities could grow in Kaibab forest

WILLIAMS, AZ - Visitors to a northern Arizona forest who don't want to pitch tents in a designated campground soon might have more options.

The Kaibab National Forest has proposed the designation of camping corridors along more than 220 miles of road on the Williams and Tusayan ranger districts. Visitors would be allowed to drive 30 feet off open roads and camp up to 200 feet from the center line of those roads.

Forest Supervisor Mike Williams says the public has asked for more opportunities for motorized dispersed camping. He says the proposal will help meet their needs.

The proposal is part of a revision to a travel management plan that's open for comment until May 31.
