A week ago, a dog was pushed to his limits on Lost Dog Trail in Scottsdale.

While hiking with his owner, the dog collapsed and died.

Now, we are hearing the 911 calls that is a horrifying warning for pet owners.

"Yeah, we can't get him to move anymore," said a male voice to the 911 dispatcher. "He's in a lot of pain."

The dispatcher asks the caller if there is any shade he can wait under while crews rush to the scene.

"There really is no shade," the caller responded. "He's underneath almost a cactus. It's an emergency, I would say. No water anymore."

The seemingly calm voice on the other end, told officials he was with two other women.

The dog's owner has since been cited for animal cruelty, though not identified.

"Our dog blew his paw pads out," the caller explained. "And there's no water and we can't really carry him."

The 50-pound dog was too heavy for the trio so they called for help about a half-mile from the trailhead.

"Pets don't sweat the way we do," said Bretta Nelson with the Arizona Humane Society. "The only mechanism they have is through panting, and if they can't pant quick enough to cool themselves down, it turns tragic very quickly."

The City of Phoenix implemented a ban for dogs on its trails when the temperature reaches 100 degrees. Scottsdale does not have the same ban.

Scottsdale Police said the person's name will not be released until the investigation is completed.
