SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Police identified the 72-year-old suspect who died in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night in Scottsdale, where a dispute over a parking spot may be to blame.
Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said the shooting happened around 5:45 p.m. near 87th Street and Osborn Road.
Authorities said a woman called police around 5 p.m. to report a dispute she was having with her male neighbor over a parking spot.
When officers arrived, 72-year-old Preston Phillips, Jr. of Scottsdale pulled up to the scene in an SUV. When an officer went to talk to the man, he pulled out a gun.
Police said the officer backed off, drew his weapon and fired at Phillips. As more officers arrived, they were able to approach the SUV and found Phillips deceased from gunshot wounds.
Clark said no officers were hurt during the incident. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave per Scottsdale police policy. He has been with the department for seven years, according to Clark.
