PD: Intruder stabs homeowner in Scottsdale neighborhood

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Police say a homeowner is expected to be OK after he was stabbed by an intruder early Thursday morning in a Scottsdale neighborhood.

Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said the incident started around 3:45 a.m. at a home near Hayden Road and East Via de Ventura.

The 55-year-old male victim, his wife, and 15-year-old son woke up when they heard 62-year-old Michael Garland come into their house, Clark said.

The homeowner confronted Garland, and a struggle ensued. That's when Garland took out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times, Clark said.

The homeowner's wife called 911 during the attack.

"My husband has blood on him," the woman tells the dispatcher on the tape.  "(The burglar) stabbed my husband with a knife."

The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries.

He was able to hold the suspect down until police arrived, Clark said.

There have been several burglaries in the area this week, but police haven't said if any of them are related to this most recent home invasion.

Police officers then arrested Garland. He is being held and charged with Aggravated Assault and Burglary.

Clark said they don't believe the suspect and homeowner knew each other.

Garland has a lengthy criminal history including at least one prior home invasion on his record.
