HAZMAT crews investigate white powder at Scottsdale business

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Fire crews were called to a Scottsdale business Wednesday afternoon after workers got sick after coming in contact with an unknown substance.

Scottsdale Fire Division Chief Jay Ducotes said the incident happened at the Loan Depot office building located near the Loop 101 and Thunderbird Road.

Authorities said reports came in employees found white powder on a few of the desks in the building.

When workers used bleach to wipe down their desks, they started getting sick.

Officials said all of the employees refused treatment saying they were only feeling nauseous at the time.

Fire captain Ken Mantay said using bleach to clean the area may hinder the investigation.

"They eradicated any evidence that we had, so were basically doing the real fine surveys to find out if there’s any other product that’s remaining."

Firefighters said 200 employees were evacuated from the building while crews worked to determine what the substance was.

Scottsdale police said they will be questioning employees to see if someone meant to disrupt business or had an intent to harm.
