DPS: 8-year-old boy killed in Loop 101 crash in Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - An 8-year-old boy is dead and two other people are suffering minor injuries Tuesday morning after a violent crash on northbound Loop 101.

Investigators say the child was killed after the minivan he was in crashed into a light pole near Hayden Road and the Loop 101 in north Scottsdale.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bart Graves said an adult male grabbed the wheel of the minivan causing the female driver to lose control and slam into the light pole.

According to Graves, the female driver did not have any type of medical condition which would have caused the passenger to grab the wheel.

The crash happened just after 11 p.m. on Monday, and emergency responders say they had to pull people out of the damaged vehicle.

The northbound lanes were closed for several hours overnight but have since reopened.

Two adults who were in the minivan were taken to the hospital but are expected to be okay.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
