Candles flickered and tears fell on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, where the first officer there to die in the line of duty was honored.
A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday night for Salt River Police Officer Jair Cabrera. Cabrera was killed Sunday during a traffic stop. Police say the suspect shot the officer before he was even able to get out of the car.
A fellow officer and close friend said hearing the news made his worst fears a reality.
"My heart dropped because we all fear this day, we all know it can happen but when it does its just, its just heartbreaking," said Sgt. Jeremiah Rangel.
The suspect in this case, Elijah Arthur, was in federal court Tuesday. He faces a first degree murder charge.
