Barry Michael Hassell II arrested in murder case of Paradise Valley couple

PHOENIX - A 29-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on charges related to the murder of a Paradise Valley couple early last year.

Barry Michael Hassell II was indicted by a grand jury on charges of homicide, burglary and conspiracy.

According to a Paradise Valley Police Department news release, Hassell was the driver for murder suspect Michael Crane .

Crane is accused of killing Lawrence and Glenna Shapiro in their home on January 30, 2012 during a robbery. Their home was then set on fire. The victims had been bound and were burned beyond recognition, according to police.

Crane has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges and is being held on a $3 million bond. If convicted, prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against him.

Crane has also been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Bruce Gaudet, who was found dead in his burning Phoenix apartment .

A $1 million bond arrest warrant was issued for Hassell and he was taken into custody around noon on Wednesday.

The Shapiro family issued the following statement Wednesday:

"We learned today of the arrest of another suspect in the senseless crimes against our parents. We appreciate the diligent, ongoing efforts of the Paradise Valley Police Department, prosecutors, and other agencies working to bring to justice all those involved. We are comforted that the apprehension and prosecution of these individuals prevents them from causing further harm to this community."
