FOUNTAIN HILLS, AZ - An Army veteran, who was completely naked at the time of the incident, was shot and killed in Fountain Hills, Ariz. by a Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy when he attacked the officer.
According to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, 26-year-old David Brandstetter was in the nude before 1 a.m. on Sunday, July 13. Officials said he was walking in traffic about a mile away from his residence when he attacked Lt. Markley Johnson.
Two 911 calls were placed about Brandstetter, and when Johnson responded to the scene he saw Brandstetter walking on a residential street acting "erratically."
According to the sheriff's office, Brandstetter opened the deputy's patrol car door and jumped on top of Johnson. He punched him and demanded that the deputy's weapon be handed over.
Officials said Branstetter tried to force the weapon away from the officer, and that's when Johnson shot him.
When paramedics responded to the scene, Brandstetter was already dead.
"It's a sad situation all around," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said. "But regardless of the reason, the suspect's actions left no alternative for my deputy."
Brandstetter was released from the U.S. Army more than a year ago, according to MCSO. He was also married, had three children and was working as an air-conditioning technician.
