CAVE CREEK, AZ - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly crash Thursday morning on Carefree Highway that killed a motorcyclist.
Detectives on scene said it appears a Nissan Armada SUV was traveling southbound on 14th Street when it stopped to make a left turn onto Carefree Highway.
After stopping, the 34-year-old male driver of the SUV made a left turn without seeing any oncoming traffic, MCSO spokesman Chris Hegstrom said.
But as the SUV made its way onto Carefree Highway, the driver spotted the motorcycle coming, according to Hegstrom.
The motorcycle then reportedly collided with the driver side of the SUV.
Hegstrom said the 56-year-old male motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.
Impairment and criminal speeding are not believed to be factors in the collision, Hegstrom said.
Carefree Highway between 16th and 7th streets was closed as of 10 a.m. It's unclear when the area will be reopened.
