MCSO: Man drops grenade off at Carefree Fire Department; station evacuated

CAREFREE, AZ - A person brought in a grenade-like device into the Carefree Fire Department Saturday afternoon forcing an evacuation.

Chris Hegstrom of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirms that a suspicious device was brought into the Carefree Fire Department near Tom Darlington Drive and Cave Creek Road.

A 300-foot evacuation surrounding the fire station was ordered by MCSO while officials evaluated whether the device was active or not.

At 4 p.m. Hegstrom said the device had been "rendered safe" and was still waiting to hear if the device was active or inert.
