Multiple Arizona highways experienced traffic backups and slowing as large numbers of travelers headed to the Phoenix area late Monday afternoon at the end of the Labor Day weekend.

Multiple car fires over the weekend slowed down traffic on Interstate 17 causing headaches and miles of backup for eager travelers who wound up stuck on the roadway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said southbound Interstate 17 had slowing on the climb out of the Verde Valley, through Black Canyon City and elsewhere.

State 87 had slowing entering Fountain Hills on the northeastern edge of the metro area, and there were major delays on State Route 60 between Payson and Kohls Ranch.

In northwestern Arizona, there was a backup of traffic from Las Vegas on U.S. 93 approaching Interstate 40 in Kingman.

There was also a miles-long backup on eastbound Interstate 10 west of the Phoenix area due to a crash.
