Pursuit on Interstate 17 north of Valley ends in driver's arrest

NEW RIVER - A pursuit on Interstate 17 north of the Valley has ended with one person under arrest.

The Department of Public Safety received a report of a reckless driver early Wednesday afternoon, an official said.

DPS spokesman Raul Garcia said the driver almost collided with a DPS vehicle sitting in the median near milepost 232.

DPS and a Yavapai County sheriff's officer tried to stop the driver but the suspect failed to yield and a pursuit began near New River.

Garcia said the vehicle hit tire spikes laid down to stop the driver who intentionally crashed into vegetation off the roadway.

The suspect refused to comply with police and negotiations began between officers and the suspect.

The suspect then took off running but was caught a short time later and arrested, Garcia said.

There was no word on why the driver fled from officers. The suspect's identity has not been released.
