ANTHEM, AZ - The mother of a 2-year-old girl found wandering around a neighborhood in Anthem has been arrested.
MCSO spokesman Joaquin Enriquez said 22-year-old Nichole Hockett is being held on suspicion of child abuse and endangerment.
Enriquez said police received a 911 call about a child being in the middle of the road around 4:30 a.m. near the Morse Court area.
The child was found in "good condition", wearing a blue shirt, no shoes, and had a wet diaper, said MCSO.
A worker from Tutor Time recognized the child from television reports and contacted authorities, said MCSO.
Police were able to contact Hockett, shortly after 7 a.m Tuesday. Hockett told authorities she was at a friend's house about 100 yards away from where the child was located, said MCSO.
During their investigation, deputies discovered Hockett had previous involvement with CPS.
"This suspect's past history with CPS, combined with what happened in the early morning hours today, clearly shows that she is an unfit mother," said Sheriff Arpaio. "The child is better off being cared for by someone else until her problems are dealt with by a court of law."
Hockett was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail after being arrested,
Officials say Child Protective Services has custody of the child.
