Dog mistakenly euthanized at Yuma shelter

YUMA, AZ - The Humane Society of Yuma says a dog that had been at its shelter for more than a week was euthanized because of an illness after it was mistakenly thought to be a stray.

Officials with the Humane Society say the dog's owners had come looking for the animal on Thursday and stated they would be back later that night to reclaim it.

The Yuma Sun reports the owners did not return, and the kennel staff were unaware that the dog had owners.

Shelter officials say they are accepting responsibility for the incident and are working to ensure that this kind of mistake doesn't happen again
