Volunteers who provide humanitarian aid to people attempting to illegally cross the border between Mexico and southern Arizona are increasing checks after finding water stations vandalized.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that volunteers for Humane Borders found six of their water stations vandalized during a check on Tuesday, including one that had been shot and a dead coyote had been placed beside it.

Humane Borders and the Border Action Network Executive Director Juanita Molina says vandalism typically consists of stolen spigots and drained water or flags bent so people can't see where the water stations are located, not bullets and carcasses.

Molina says water stations are targeted because people are unhappy about immigration and don't want to support the illegal trek.
