Tucson tries luring Tesla with $3 billion permit

TUCSON, AZ - Tucson officials are hoping a $3 billion building permit will help woo electric car company Tesla to the southern Arizona city.

Mayor Jonathan Rothschild said Thursday that Tesla Motors did not apply for the permit.

Rothschild says the permit is intended to let the company know that if they decide to build in Tucson, the city is ready to help.

The mayor says Tucson is an ideal fit for several reasons including costs, logistics and the proximity to Mexico.

The news was first reported by the Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/1o9E5TA).

Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada and California are competing for the planned battery plant, which will represent a $5 billion investment from the California-based car company and its partners.
