Tucson schools: Culture course proposed for some Tucson schools

TUCSON, AZ - Freshman at some Tucson high schools may be required to take culture courses as part of a program aimed at retaining more students.

The course is designed to replace the dismantled Mexican American Studies program. It's called "Ninth Grade Culture, Identity and Transformation: A Culturally Relevant Viewpoint."

The plan calls for offering the courses at Rincon, Sahuaro and Santa Rita high schools in the fall. The rest of Tucson's high schools would offer the course starting with the 2015 school year.

The school district's governing board has yet to approve the curriculum or make the class a requirement.

District administrators plan to present an overview of the course at the governing board's May 7 meeting. The full curriculum will be unveiled May 28.
