Tucson police ID wheelchair bound man they killed

TUCSON, AZ - Tucson police have identified a man in a wheelchair who was fatally shot after he pulled a gun on an officer.

Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Widmer says 23-year-old Johnny Castillo-Romero died at a hospital after Saturday morning's shooting.

Widmer says Castillo-Romero was arguing with a man at an apartment complex when he fired a shot at the man, who immediately called police.

Sgt. Ray Mechtel was the first officer to arrive and saw Castillo-Romero in his wheelchair. He repeatedly ordered him to put his hands up, but instead he pulled a gun and Mechtel shot him.

Mechtel is a 17-year veteran of the department. The shooting is being investigated by homicide and internal affairs detectives.
