New Tucson streetcar has large ridership

TUCSON, AZ - The new Tucson streetcars have attracted more than 60,000 riders during their first weekend in operation.

The kickoff weekend for the Tucson Sun Link Streetcar system was free for all riders. About 17,000 people rode on Friday, about 25,000 on Saturday, and another 18,000 hopped on during the 12 hours of service on Sunday. The city held festivities celebrating the project.

There are eight streetcars that can each hold about 150 people. The almost 4-mile line connects the University of Arizona, the University of Arizona Medical Center and the downtown area.

Construction on the nearly $200 million project began in 2012.
