Math error causes shortfall in TUSD executive's bonus

TUCSON, AZ - An error in the calculation of a Tucson school superintendent's bonus has resulted in a higher payout than the board initially approved.

The Tucson Unified School District's governing board on Tuesday awarded John Pedicone nearly $16,000 on top of the $35,000 it approved last month.

The Arizona Daily Star says Pedicone has elected not to take any of the bonus money. He is instead donating the $35,000 to the Educational Enrichment Foundation and funneling the additional nearly $16,000 back into TUSD's general fund.

TUSD is facing a $17 million budget deficit next school year and the district has already implemented a hiring and travel freeze.

The performance pay is built into Pedicone's contract, but is withheld each year pending an evaluation by the board.
