Immigrant rights activist to hand out flashlights

TUCSON, AZ - Immigrant rights advocates set up water stations across the desert and spend days looking for people in distress aimed at stopping deaths as they try to cross illegally into the United States.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that Robin Hoover, founder of the group Humane Borders, now plans to distribute flashlights.

He plans to work with a local church just across the border in Mexico to pass out the high-powered flashlights to would-be border crossers before they embark on the dangerous journey. The lights are equipped with a powerful beam and a flashing S.O.S. function to call for help.

Hoover says he hopes the plans saves some lives.

In southern Arizona alone, according to the newspaper, the remains of more than 2,200 border crossers have been recovered since 2001.
