TUCSON, AZ - Authorities say a man taking part in a Tucson bicycle race was struck and killed by a motorist on Saturday.
Northwest Fire District Capt. Adam Goldberg said 59-year-old Tucson resident John S. Henderson died at the scene.
Goldberg said the accident happened on the eastbound frontage road of Interstate 10 near Sunset Road.
He said fire paramedics arrived within five minutes and found Henderson with critical injuries as a result of the collision.
Paramedics initiated advanced life support treatment, but were unsuccessful in their attempts to resuscitate Henderson.
Henderson was a registered participant in this year's El Tour de Tucson perimeter bicycle race, Goldberg said.
Paramedics evaluated and transported the male driver of the car to a local hospital.
Goldberg said the Department of Public Safety is investigating the accident.
