TUCSON, AZ - A man in southern Arizona was arrested after his 2-year-old niece was struck by a stray bullet on Saturday afternoon.
The Pima County Sheriff's Office said deputies were told the girl was shot while playing in her backyard.
She had already been taken by ambulance to the hospital with an injury to her leg that was not life-threatening.
Detectives took over the investigation and found that witness statements and physical evidence at the scene were inconsistent.
When confronted with the inaccuracies, the witnesses told detectives the girl's uncle was responsible for the shooting.
They said that 23-year-old Richard Moreno was in the carport while visiting the family when he accidentally discharged his weapon.
The bullet went through wall and struck the child while she was in the living room.
Moreno fled the scene but was taken into custody at his mother's house after surrendering to detectives.
He was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center on one count of aggravated assault.
