400 inmates fight at Whetstone Unit in Tucson; 17 transported to hospital

TUCSON, AZ - A Tucson, Ariz. prison remains locked down Monday morning after a fight broke out between about 400 inmates the day before.

Department of Corrections spokesman Bill Lamoreaux said the fight started at the Whetstone Unit of the Arizona State Prison Complex around 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

Seventeen inmates were transported to local hospitals for treatment after the fight, Lamoreaux said.

Two of them remain in the hospital as of 10:30 a.m. Monday, but the others returned to the complex.

Lamoreaux said the fight involved around 300 Caucasian and Mexican-American inmates and approximately 100 African-American inmates.

He said 80 of the inmates were moved to other institutions.

Lamoreaux said the Whetstone Unit remains locked down during the investigation. Other units of the complex are returning to normal.

The Whetstone Unit prison houses approximately 1,250 inmates.
