2 accused of elder abuse at S. Arizona care facility

TUCSON, AZ - Two people have been arrested after a 93-year-old woman was injured at an assisted care facility north of Tucson.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department says the alleged abuse occurred at Asterion Acres Home on North Asterion Lane.

A deputy was told that two certified caregivers at the facility were believed to be involved in the incidents which had been occurring for a few weeks.

The deputy saw the patient's injuries and arranged her transport to a hospital.

The staff reported that the two employees separately, but on multiple occasions, had struck the woman with an open hand and fist, hit her with a remote control unit and other objects.

They also said the woman had been thrown onto her bed and into her wheelchair.

The deputy was told the two employees had been taken off the schedule and weren't currently working at the facility.

Sheriff's detectives working elder abuse cases took over the investigation and worked with state agencies to interview the suspect employees and make sure the remaining residents were evaluated.

They learned the remaining residents were not hurt or in any danger and none of the other staff was involved in the abuse.

Detectives located the male suspect on Tuesday. He has been identified as 29-year-old Annuhar Jesus Ruiz.

Ruiz was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center and charged with four counts of vulnerable adult abuse.

The second employee, 67-year-old Elisa Moreno, was located on Wednesday and also booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center.
