Shipman Fire erupts southeast of Valley (VIDEO)

KEARNY, AZ - A fire has erupted near a small Arizona town where officials say two homes have burned down and the blaze is threatening the local airport.

Arizona State Forestry officials say the Shipman Fire near Kearny was reported about 5:15 p.m. Monday and it's unclear how it started.

A Kearny police spokesperson said the flames, burning on State Route 177 at milepost 144, have already forced 50 residents in the Stephens Trailer Park from their homes. Officials say there is a plan to evacuate the entire town if necessary.

The Red Cross is opening a shelter at the Ray Elementary School in Kearny.  Anyone evacuated from their homes due to this fire can go to the shelter, where cots, bedding, food, water and nursing care are available.

As of 12 a.m. Tuesday morning, the fire has charred 300 acres.
