Sheriff's office to patrol county parks, lakes for DUIs, underage drinking

PHOENIX - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office will be conducting DUI patrols at county parks, lakes and rivers during the Memorial Day weekend.

The sheriff's office is focusing on preventing drowning, underage drinking and impaired driving of cars and watercraft, according to a press release.

No-tolerance operations will take place at Saguaro Lake; Canyon Lake; Apache Lake; Bartlett Lake; Lake Pleasant; Verde River; Lower Salt River; all county parks; and the Tonto National Forest.

The enforcement event will be funded in part by several grants from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, Arizona Game and Fish and the United States Forest Service.

In the last year alone, the sheriff's office has made 849 misdemeanor DUI arrests, 94 felony DUI arrests, 1,362 underage consumption arrests and 230 arrests for operating a watercraft under the influence.
