San Juan Fire forces Boy Scouts to evacuate

PINETOP, AZ - Nearly 200 Boy Scouts from Gilbert had to cut short a week-long camping trip to the high country due to the San Juan fire.

The Scouts were camping at Greens Peak when authorities told them to evacuate, Scout leader Eric Eaves said.

"I wasn't really afraid, but there was a lot of concern for the boys," Eaves said.

They got the notice to leave at about noon Thursday, Eaves said.

"Smoke got worse and worse, it was getting black then red," Eaves 12-year-old son, Tyler, said.

Most of the Scouts, and the 75 adults with them, returned to Gilbert.

No one was hurt in the evacuation.

Several dozen Scouts and their leaders decided to camp in Show Low for the night.

Their campfire stories were told around a lantern, instead of actual flames.
