PHOENIX - Maricopa County sheriff's detectives arrested 15 people Wednesday suspected of entering the country illegally and attempting to travel to Tennessee and North Carolina.
Members of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office human smuggling unit arrested 15 people from Guatemala and Mexico that were reportedly smuggled into the country in a Dodge Caravan.
An investigation revealed that the suspects had allegedly paid up to $4,500 to be transported into the country and transported to Tennessee and North Carolina.
The group reportedly crossed into Arizona near Alter and Mexicali before being located in northern Maricopa County, officials said.
Seven of the suspects were booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on felony charges. The remaining eight suspects were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has made 93 human smuggling arrests in the past six weeks, according to an agency report.
