PHOENIX - An inmate who escaped during a medical appointment at a hospital on the Gila River Indian Community Reservation earlier this week has been located and taken into custody.
Authorities had been looking for Francisco Gonzales since Tuesday after he was able to free himself from his restraints and escape while at an appointment at the Hu Hu Kam Hospital in Sacaton.
Gonzales was found with his girlfriend at an apartment in Phoenix around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, according to the Gila River Police Department.
Gila River police worked with the U.S. Marshals Service, the East Valley Task Force and Mesa Police Department to track Gonzales down.
Gonzales will face a new charge for escape. He already faced charges from Maricopa County for aggravated assault and armed robbery.
Gonzales’ girlfriend will face charges for helping the suspect escape.
Both were booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail.
Gila River police said they anticipate further arrests as they continue to investigate the escape and identify others who are believed to have been involved.
