DPS: 2 confirmed dead in Arizona crash

SUPERIOR, AZ - Authorities say two people are dead after a collision involving a Corvette and at least three motorcycles northeast of the Valley.

The Department of Public Safety says the accident happened on State Route 177 at milepost 163 just south of Superior.

DPS said at least two people were confirmed dead at the scene. They are identified as Kathy Benson, 52, of Jamestown, North Dakota, and Dennis McDonald, 66, of Airdrie, Alberta, Canada.

Carrick Cook with DPS said one of the motorcyclists drove left of the center lane causing the Corvette to swerve, hitting the guard rail and then over-correcting and hitting the motorcycles.

Cook said the deceased were among the motorcyclists.

Air15 video showed the Corvette resting in a ditch next to a mountain wall and at least three motorcycles down.

There was no word on other injuries, but a witness tells ABC15 several rescue helicopters responded to the scene.

The Arizona Department of Transportation closed the roadway for several hours into Friday evening.
