Clifton flooding: RV park evacuated, flood gates closed as San Francisco River rises due to rainfall

CLIFTON, AZ - Authorities in the southeastern Arizona community of Clifton have closed flood gates along the San Francisco River due to high water levels.

An RV park along the river was evacuated Sunday, and residents in low-lying areas were warned to move to higher ground.

A flood advisory was in effect for the area, but forecasters with the National Weather Service say the river crested at between 23 and 24 feet and was expected to gradually fall during the afternoon.

The Arizona Department of Transportation had temporarily closed U.S. 191 in Clifton due to high water levels. Officials were initially concerned about the water reaching the bottom of the Arizona 191 bridge.

Heavy rains in neighboring New Mexico and eastern Arizona have resulted in increased runoff into the region's streams and rivers.
