SAFFORD, AZ - A police officer was killed in a head-on collision in eastern Arizona Sunday afternoon.
Warren Youngman with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs said 26-year-old Aaron Peru, an officer on the San Carlos Indian Reservation, was driving to work on US 70 just west of Safford when his vehicle was struck.
According to Youngman, Peru was headed to work around 4 p.m. for a mandatory meeting when a trailer being towed behind another vehicle came unhitched, hitting Peru's car head-on.
Peru had only been with the San Carlos Police Department for about a month.
Youngman said no other injuries were reported in the collision.
It is unclear at this time what caused the second vehicle's trailer to come loose.
It is not known if the driver of the second car will face charges.
A memorial account has been set up at Chase Bank for anyone wishing to make a monetary donation.
