AMADO, AZ - Border Patrol agents rescued nine undocumented immigrants who were being smuggled into the U.S. in a U-Haul truck last week.
According to a news release from Customs and Border Protection, agents became suspicious of the driver and passenger during an immigration inspection at the I-19 checkpoint near Amado in southern Arizona.
Agents asked the driver for the key to inspect the truck’s cargo area, but the driver claimed not to have a key for the padlock.
During a secondary inspection, Border Patrol agents used detection technology to find seven individuals locked in the cargo area without fresh air or any means of escape.
The key was later found in the cabin of the vehicle and released the immigrants, including one juvenile.
Agents processed all the subjects for prosecution and/or removal proceedings.
CBP said while no one was injured in this incident, an undocumented immigrant lost his life last summer in similar smuggling attempt.
They say the danger is high due to heat, the possibility of a vehicle accident or other unforeseen circumstances.
