Mexican sewer overflow affecting washes in Arizona

NOGALES, AZ - Officials in the Arizona border city of Nogales are warning residents to stay out of the Nogales and Trickey washes because of a Mexican sewer overflow.

They say there's a reported break in a 24-inch sewer line in Nogales, Sonora, and the sewer overflow is going directly into the Nogales Wash.

Trickey Wash runs from the International border to the Nogales Wash in between Court and Hudgins Streets in downtown Nogales.

International Boundary and Water Commission officials are chlorinating the flow in the wash.

Authorities say the overflow apparently began last Friday due to contractor work at a bridge construction site in Nogales, Sonora.

Engineers from the city, IBWC and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality were at the scene Thursday as they continue to assess the situation.
