MARICOPA - Authorities said a man is in critical condition at a Phoenix hospital after being shot by an Maricopa Police Department officer Tuesday afternoon.
Ricardo Alvarado, spokesman for the Maricopa Police Department, said officers received a call around 2:15 p.m. regarding a man who was threatening to harm himself.
Alvarado said the suspect reportedly received some news from his wife that he did not like. The suspect then pulled out a weapon and threatened to harm himself, said Alvarado.
The man then fled leading police officials on a short pursuit, he said. Police used "stop sticks" to end the chase.
The suspect was then shot by an officer and transported to Maricopa Medical Center. The officer, Christopher Evans, was not hurt in the shooting.
Specific details regarding what led to the shooting were under investigation, according to Alvarado.
Maricopa is located roughly 35 miles south of Phoenix.
