MARICOPA, AZ - A 35-year-old man is behind bars after stabbing his cousin after an argument last week.
Pinal County Sheriff's spokesman Tim Gaffney said on Wednesday, November 21, deputies were called to the "Farmers Market" located near West Papago and White Roads to investigate a stabbing call.
When deputies arrived, they found an adult man who had been stabbed multiple times.
Detectives learned that around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, the victim and his cousin, Isidoro Renteria Contreras, 25, got into an argument after Contreras made a disparaging remark about the victim's mother.
The argument escalated and Contreras stabbed his cousin multiple times with an 8-inch knife.
The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries.
Gaffney said Contreras was booked into the Pinal County Detention Center for aggravated assault.
Authorities said an immigration hold was also put on Contreras after he admitted to being in the country illegally.
