PHOENIX - Authorities say a Maricopa man is facing state criminal charges for allegedly manufacturing counterfeit automotive air bags.
Phoenix police say 58-year-old Dwight Smith was arrested Tuesday by a joint task force that also involved U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
They say Smith was booked into Maricopa County Jail on suspicion of counterfeit marks and the manufacturing of counterfeit air bags and components.
Federal agents and Phoenix police served a state search warrant at Smith's home and say they found more than 40 counterfeit automotive air bags.
A police bomb squad detonated several dozen small initiator components at the home as a precaution.
Detectives determined most of the air bags wouldn't have worked properly if they were installed in vehicles.
