West Nile virus reported in Pinal County

FLORENCE, AZ - Health officials say Pinal County has its first case of West Nile virus that was acquired locally this year.

The Pinal County Public Health Services District says a Casa Grande man in his 50s is recovering.

The virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes aren't as active in cooler weather, but health officials say the insects still pose a risk to county residents.

The West Nile virus can cause symptoms ranging from mild flu-like symptoms to severe neurological symptoms.

Horses also are susceptible to the virus.
