FLORENCE, AZ - A Pinal County man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after he was convicted of severely abusing his girlfriend's 2-year-old son.
John Alvarez, 23, served as the primary caregiver for the victim while the boy's mother was at work, according to county officials.
According to the Pinal County Attorney's Office, on December 21, 2009, Alvarez caused the 2-year-old's lumbar spine to fracture and dislocate.
When the child's mother returned home from work that night she took him to an urgent care facility and he was later transferred to Phoenix Children's Hospital in Phoenix where doctors also discovered 16 other fractures and serious internal injuries.
Alvarez was charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of child abuse.
On Friday, a jury found Alvarez guilty on both counts and the judge sentenced him to 20 years of prison on both counts, to run consecutively.
