Authorities say a jail inmate in Florence remains hospitalized in critical condition after being assaulted by another inmate.

Detention officers at the Pinal County Sheriff's Office Adult Detention Center found the 37-year-old inmate with head injuries and lying unconscious on the cement floor of the recreation area around 6:45 p.m. Sunday.

They say surveillance video shows the victim was playing basketball with other inmates.

The victim allegedly was pushed to the ground and hit multiple times in the head by another inmate before collapsing.

The victim's name isn't being released.

Sheriff's officials say 40-year-old Michael Favela has been placed in a segregation cell while the assault is being investigated.

They say Favela is facing new charges of aggravated assault. He originally was sentenced to jail for kidnapping and aggravated robbery
