FLORENCE, AZ - Animal Control officers are asking for the public's help locating the owner of a black Chow-mix dog who was abandoned near San Tan Valley Thursday.
Officials said concerned citizens alerted authorities when they found the dog passed out on the road.
When Animal Control officers arrived they found the dog in severe distress from the heat. The dog was also found with a muzzle on her face that prevented her from eating or drinking.
"Our officers recorded her temperature at a life-threatening 107 degrees," said Animal Control Director Kaye Dickson. "Her paws were also burned, possibly from walking on hot, dry ground."
Animal Control officers applied ice packs to the dog to bring down her body temperature.
Officials said she now appears calm and not in distress like when they found her. The pup was transferred to a veterinarian's office for further examination.
