PHOENIX - A Guatemalan woman in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement died Sunday night of an apparent suicide, according to an agency press release.
Elsa Guadalupe-Gonzales, 24, was found having hanged herself in her cell at the Eloy Detention Center.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene but were unable to revive Guadalupe-Gonzales.
Guadalupe-Gonzales had recently crossed the border unlawfully and came into ICE's custody after border patrol agents picked her up near Nogales on March 18.
She had been held at the Eloy Detention Center since March 20 awaiting immigration hearings.
