Northbound Interstate 17 north of Phoenix has been reopened following an hours-long closure after a fatal accident involving cattle on the highway that is the main travel route between Phoenix and Flagstaff.
The Arizona Department of Transportation says northbound I-17 has reopen near Black Canyon City after an accident Wednesday morning. ADOT says the backup stretches up to five miles long.
The state Department of Public Safety says multiple vehicles were involved and that cattle on the highway were struck.
State Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves says a female driver was killed when she was struck by a truck after her vehicle hit one of the cattle.
Graves say the driver was struck while outside her vehicle. He says two passengers were hurt, one with life-threatening injuries.
