Veteran risks life to save beagle hit by a car in busy traffic

A lucky beagle is set on a path to becoming a war veteran's best friend after being saved after getting hit by a car.

The veteran reportedly crossed several lanes of busy traffic after watching the dog get hit by a car on a Missouri street, risking his own life to save the animal.

"I'm just compassionate...I love animals," the veteran said. "To see an animal get hit, I'm going to do everything I can."

The veteran said that after seeing so much loss in his own life as a soldier, he was determined to save the dog.

"Saving a life is saving a life. It doesn't matter if it's an animal or a human," he said.

According to ABC15's sister station KSHB , the veteran reportedly called police for help and was then told to call local animal control.

Animal control never came, so the veteran called a friend for help.

The beagle, now named Buster, is expected to make a full recovery, but is still being treated by veterinarians.

The veteran is planning to adopt Buster once he is healthy enough to leave the veterinarian.
