LIVONIA, MI - An adult recreation league soccer referee died Tuesday after receiving a punch to the head from a disgruntled player.
Police said 44-year-old John Bieniewicz, of Westland, Michigan died after taking a swift punch to the head by 36-year-old Baseel Abdul-Amir Saad in Mies Park, Michigan on Sunday. Bieniewicz had just ejected Saad from the game when the Dearborn resident lost his cool.
Saad was arraigned Monday afternoon, charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm. Those charges will likely change now that Bieniewicz lost his life.
According to the Associated Press, Bieniewicz was a dialysis technician at Mott Children's Hospital who lived in Westland with his wife and two sons.
"The Livonia Police Department has expressed our deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Bienewicz," read a press release Tuesday.
