Rescuers save stranded humpback whale along Australian coast (VIDEO)

Rescuers managed to free a young humpback whale on Thursday morning after it had been stranded for 38 hours on a beach on Australia’s Gold Coast.

A number of attempts had been made to free the 26-foot male since it washed ashore Tuesday night.

Finally, on the fifth attempt on Thursday morning the whale was dragged further out to sea by a boat as people cheered from the shores of Palm Beach.

It is the fifth successful rescue of a beached humpback in Queensland, according to local broadcaster ABC News and experts are warning there may be more that become stranded, with close to 19,000 whales migrating along the East Coast of Australia this year.
