HOUSTON, TX - Being pregnant means it’s okay to put on weight, but when it comes to pregnant elephant Tess, her trainers at the Houston Zoo are telling her it’s time to shed some pounds.
According to Houston’s ABC affiliate KTRK , the 33-year-old Asian elephant is expecting and overweight. Her due date is in 2015, and she has to lose about 500 pounds by then. She currently tips the scales at over 7,000 pounds.
Elephants are pregnant for about 22 months, and Tess is in the early stages of her fourth pregnancy at nine months.
According to zoo officials, Tess walks 2 miles a day, and lifts her trunk and her legs to help get her heart rate up. Her diet consists of grain, hay and produce.
Zoo trainers said Tess doesn’t know she’s overweight but she is enjoying the extra time her caregivers spend with her.
According to zoo officials, Tess losing 500 pounds is about the same as asking a 200 pound man to drop 12 pounds.
