Phoenix firefighter injured assisting in weekend mountain rescue

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - A female Scottsdale firefighter was injured while performing a mountain rescue of a potentially injured hiker Sunday morning.

Scottsdale Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Read said fire crews responded to a possibly injured hiker Sunday morning at Pinnacle Peak Park.

The patient was located, evaluated and assisted down the mountain, said Read. The patient refused further care.

During the rescue operation, the firefighter injured their ankle and had to be assisted down the mountain using a "Big Wheel." The firefighter was transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak for further evaluation.

Fire crews have been busy assisting with several mountain rescues at various trails throughout the Valley over the weekend.

Officials would like to remind hikers to drink lots of water, wear sunscreen, light clothing, proper shoes and to bring a cell phone in case of an emergency.
